The yearly National Open softball championships is close to getting its permanent home in Lipa City after Mayor Oscar Gozos sought permission from Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines( ASA-Phil) to make his city the sport’s capital in the country.

"Yes, if the ASA-Phil will [give its] consent, I want Lipa to be the permanent venue of the National Open. If this happens, they would be ridding themselves of the perennial problem of looking for host each year," Gozos said in a report posted on

He said the tournament, which was held in three Lipa villages from May 30 to June 6, has attracted hundreds of Lipeños.

"The Lipeños have always been softball lovers ever since I can remember. Nakita mo naman ang daan-daang taong nanood ng games. Talaga namang masisiyahan ka," he said.

The finals match between eventual winner Philippine Air Force and Zamboanga City held in Barangay San Sebastian drew 18,000 spectators while the game between University of the Philippines and Adamson U-Manila held in Banay-banay won by the Maroons, had 16,000 yelling and jumping gallery.

"Just for the interest shown by our people, not only in Lipa but the adjacent towns as well, led me to propose to ASA-Phil president Jean Henri Lhuillier, through chief aide Jun Veloso, that Lipa be made the permanent home of the Open," said Gozos.

ASA-Phil secretary-general Danny Francisco, who was at the championship games last week to present the trophies and individual awards, said he sees no problem making Lipa the Open’s permanent site.

"When Mr. Lhuillier arrives, I will suggest that he calls the board to a meeting to discuss that possibility as well as the other projects proposed by the Mayor," he said.
